Cook's Network

Next meeting: Tuesday, June 12

Location: RTB office

Time: 6:30 - 8:00

Summary of April meeting:

A group of 11 met, including some program staff. This allowed us to get some interesting perspectives from both sides. We also welcomed some dietary staff for the first time.

There was lots of discussion on a variety of topics. 2 people brought recipes to share and they will be posted as links soon.

It was mentioned that a half day cooks' conference is planned for June with  staff from the Peterborough Health Unit. More details will come out soon.

Patti's Chicken Alfredo Sauce

Betty's Cheese Sauce with Pasta

Summary of February meeting:

A group of 8 dietary staff met at the campus location of Trent Child Care. There was agreement that they often need to be a “Jill of all Trades”!

Several people brought a fish recipe to share (see links below).

As always, there is lots of variation between what foods are well received at different centres.

There was some discussion about how pasta dishes are served. Some sites mix in the sauce and others leave them separate.

One person told about a surprising success with Brussel sprouts.

The use of frozen vegetables and fruits came up. Adding frozen blueberries to fruit salad or yogurt made it more special. Frozen peas, beans or corn can make a different kind of finger food for snack.

One person shared how she cooks rice in the oven.

Someone else expressed frustration with can openers and the Starfrit brand was suggested as being a good type.

For the next meeting, there was a request to bring sauce recipes. (i.e. cheese, sweet and sour, etc.)

Nancy's fishburgers

Brenda's fish chowder

Cathy's Fillet Bake

Theresia's Salmon Loaf - still to come

Notes from December's meeting:

A group of six enjoyed the shared treats and tea provided by Cathy. There was talk about the challenges of easy afterschool snacks. The need to offer new things many times was discussed as it takes some time for children to get used to new foods.

Some of the things the group shared were:

Bits and bites (homemade)

Tuna salad with mayonnaise (with crackers)

Egg salad with mayonnaise

Ham cubes and cheese cubes

Hard boiled eggs

Cheese and crackers

Hummus

Baked loaves
